Finding a House during the Holidays
The holidays are a time for family, friends, and celebration. They can also be a stressful time for those looking to buy or rent their next home. If you’re in the process of finding your next house during this busy period, here’s some advice on how to reduce the stress.
Donate unused items to a local charity or shelter.
Donate unused items to a local charity or shelter. Try asking your friends if they would like any of the items you are getting rid of – it’s an easy way to make some extra cash for your new home! Also, try looking online at Craigslist and Kijiji for used furniture options. It can be hard finding secondhand furniture at the best of times, but during the holidays, it’s even more challenging to find something that will fit your budget and décor.
Find Ways to Cut Moving Costs.
If you’re moving a short distance, consider moving and renting a truck for cheap or finding someone with a large enough vehicle that can help you out. If you have any friends or family that can help you out for the day, ask them if they would be willing. There are always ways to find creative solutions on moving days! Also, save money on purchasing expensive moving boxes by asking your local grocery store manager if you can have some boxes. They crush these huge boxes daily in the back of the store!
Organize Your Packing for the Holidays.
Try and pack things that you don’t need daily separately from your holiday decorations and dishes to make unpacking at your new home easier. Also, double-check that you have plenty of blankets for any breakable dishes because nothing can ruin a move like breaking glassware during transit. You’ll thank yourself later!
Check the Weather Report Before You Pack.
Try and pack lighter items if it’s hot, or your heavier ones if it is cold – this will make moving easier too!. Most importantly…don’t forget to check the weather report before you pack and move.
Remember to Send Out Address Updates When You Move.
If you’re moving during the holidays, chances are everyone in your network will be trying to wish you a happy holiday or congratulations for another year of life! Be sure to remind them that they can no longer reach you at your old home before sending out address updates with all of your new information.
Take the Housewarming Party Outside!
Get creative with your holiday party plans by hosting one outside – not only is it greener, but it’ll give you more space! Jim at J&J Tent suggests taking the party outside to limit the number of people in your new home. “Having a tent makes it easy to throw a party during the holiday season. No one wants a ton of people in their new home, so renting a tent (with heaters) allows your guests to stay outside and enjoy the holiday season in style.”
Create Your “To Do” List Early
Stay organized by creating a “To Do” list before your holidays begin so you can make sure everything gets done in due time.
Social Media Is Your Friend
Finally, be sure to get the social media word out! Let people know you’re moving or searching for a new home. Post your housewarming party on Facebook and Twitter so all of your friends can join in on the fun.
