Working with the Space You Have
Figuring out how to decorate and style a small rental space can be challenging. However, there are ways to make a unit feel larger and more open by how you arrange the room and items found within. One of the easiest ways to make a rental feel bigger is to work with the space and items you already have and simply add to the decor to embellish the positives.
The Kitchen
The kitchen is often the focal point of any home, no matter the size. If the kitchen feels cramped and uninviting, then the function of the home will suffer. Maximizing the space is a must when dealing with a smaller property. One way to do this is to use all the vertical wall space available to help keep the countertops clean and the feel of the space decluttered. Think about adding floating shelving units or hooks on the wall to add storage space. Have upper and lower cabinets to store appliances and stack cutlery out of view.
The Bathroom
The bathrooms are just as important as the kitchen when it comes to a rental property. Oftentimes, one has to get creative when trying to make a bathroom feel bigger and more personal. To add depth, install racks or cube shelving on the wall. The shelving will serve as both a decoration and a way to store items for daily use. Think about using a vibrant tile on one wall or shower to make the room feel larger. When spaces are small, it is wise to use a more neutral color and add a splash of bold to personalize the room.
The Living Room
A cluttered living room is a definite No-No when working with a small space. It can often be a struggle to fit all of your living room furniture into the room in a manner that makes sense. The number one thing is deciding what items make the room functional and comfortable. Then, remove all the extras that aren’t needed and crowd the room. Finally, use the wall space to draw the eye up towards the ceiling to make the space feel bigger.
The Bedroom
Once again, use the vertical space to “lift” the ceiling of the room and give the illusion of a larger space. For example, think about installing a bookcase that goes floor to ceiling and adding statement pieces to each shelf. A lightweight and elegant headboard can also give the impression of a taller space. Thin furniture with tapered legs can also help to make a room feel larger because it feels more proportional to the room.
Wall Decor
Mirrors, Mirrors, and more Mirrors! A mirror is a great way to transform a cramped space.
- Hang a mirror near a window, and it will bounce light around the room.
- Lean a mirror against the wall to create the illusion of a bigger space.
- Place a mirror on the fire mantel to catch the natural light and bring a new perspective.
Adding mirrors to your decor is a great way to be creative while also being functional in creating a larger “feeling” room.
Wall lighting is another trick to bring style and space back to a small area. By eliminating the side table lamp, you have provided more space for other items. To brighten a room, look to add color and depth through removable wallpaper, bright rugs and curtains.
